Garden Techniques - Dealing With Pests

There are many birds, animals and insects which are a joy to the gardener both in their beauty and in the help they give us in the garden. But there are also many which are pests and which can ruin a beautiful garden. Life would be a a great deal simpler if we could just wave a magic wand and get rid of the ones we don't want, but it's not that simple. To begin with - we have to identify them. One of the best methods of keeping pests down is good garden hygiene. Keeping your garden clear of rubbish will reduce the trouble spots where pests can breed and take hold. It's a very simple remedy, but one of the most effective, particularly against slugs.

There are some creatures that really help keep pests down, the common earthworm is a powerful ally in his constant wanderings through the soil which keeps it open to air and water. A lot of our common garden birds feed on garden pests. Many insects feed on their harmful relatives. Toads and Frogs can demolish a huge number of insects in one meal and are a joy to have in the garden. Making your garden attractive to birds and toads is one of the best pest control methods. A good bird table or nest box, food spread about in spring, and some water are invitations for birds to stick around in your garden. If you want Toads and Frogs, make sure there is some damp shade. A few reasonably sized stones in the shade of a shrub with maybe some damp leaves would be a luxury residence for a toad. At night they will venture out to catch their food - which they prefer live.

Slugs are a particular bane of my life - they come out and munch on all your tender plants if given half a chance. Again the birds will help, and you can use safe slug pellets which do not harm birds or hedgehogs. There are all kinds of mulches and even slug fences that you can get, the worst damage is often done by the ones you can't see which lurk under the ground. If you want to use a biological control you can get Nematodes from specialist suppliers which inhabit the soil and prey on the slugs. It is a more lengthy process than using some of the chemicals but much kinder to your garden.

Munching Insects with heavy jaws are particularly destructive and can rip through a vegetable patch in no time at all - I lost no end of cabbages and sprouts last year to caterpillars. This year I am working hard at encouraging the birds to counteract this. You can use sprays but do make sure that they are bird and fish friendly if you have a pond. This type of insect is killed by taking the spray into its body as it nibbles on your plants. Vegetables are particularly susceptible to pests - they like to eat them just as much as we do, and many of our crops have their own particular pests which only feed on one plant. Tomato Worms for example which burrow into the young fruit and eat it from the inside out. You can often harvest a particularly luscious looking crop of potatoes only to find the tubers inhabited by yellow and black striped potato bugs. My particular hate is the small green caterpillar which ravages cabbages, broccoli and cauliflower. Liberal applications of soapy water from a spray gun are quite effective in getting rid of that particular nuisance.

There are some pests where the only defence is to get rid of badly infested plant before it spreads. The plant needs to be destroyed or removed completely from the garden. A couple of years ago it caused me great distress to have to take all the Lilies out of my garden. I had a large pot which was full of the most beautiful white lilies - until I spotted the dreaded Scarlet Lily Beetle. They are a beautiful shade of red but utterly destructive and will destroy every lily in their path. I will replant after another year or so and hope that no larvae have survived.

Sucking insects such as greenfly and lice almost glue themselves onto the host plant as they need to be able to feed by constant sucking. They are unbelievably destructive for their size and as they breed rapidly even a large plant can soon be infested. Again soapy water sprayed liberally can help, and I have had some success with a vinegar and water mix (about half and half) but not on young plants! Be careful if you use the soapy water not to spray over any water in your garden or you will potentially damage the pond life - frogs and toads in particular. If you encourage Ladybirds in your garden they can control the greenfly fairly effectively as well.

My personal preference is for natural controls without the use of chemicals but in order for this to work you do have to accept that for a couple of years or so, until the natural balance asserts itself, you will lose some crops and precious plants. The best weapon you have during that time is constant vigilance, removal of infected plants and determination. If you give in and start to use chemical sprays you will have to start the whole process again as many chemicals are indiscriminate in doing their work. There are some sprays which comply with organic principles and of course, you can buy biological controls in the form of beneficial insects and bacteria. Which ever method you choose, you will never completely remove pests from your garden - but you should be able to keep their damage to a minimum.

Balance, Moderation, Variety - The Keys To All Natural Supplements

The uniformed public is often impressed with which nutrition product has the highest levels of vitamin C, or the most efficiently absorbed minerals mistakenly thinking that more is always better.

However in nutrition, like life, having a lot of one thing (money) does not necessarily guarantee longevity or happiness. If the capacity of a cup is five ounces, filling it with six, twelve, or thirty-two ounces does not make it 'fuller' or 'better.' What benefit does having more protein do for an athlete if there is insufficient energy from carbohydrates to transform that protein into muscle? If a supplement contains the highest amount of beta-carotene, what does it matter, when the excess beta-carotene can actually block the absorption of other valuable carotenes?

The same can be said of phytonutrients (phytonutrients are powerful antioxidents and naturally occurring compounds that contribute to the flavor, color, and disease resistance of plants - ie, fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes). Why emphasize a single phytonutrient when there are literally thousands, many with functions that have yet to be identified? Considering the complete picture is much more important that focusing on one part. Moderation is more powerful than excess. Balance is better than emphasizing the contribution of a simple ingredient. And variety will generally produce greater benefits than a single nutrient.

A brief look at the science behind free radicals and antioxidants illustrates this message of balance, variety, and moderation. There are six classes of free radicals, which research shows may be largely responsible for chronic illnesses such as heart disease and cancer. These are referred to as reactive oxygen species (ROS). The ORAC (oxygen radical absorption capacity) test measures the 'seek and destroy' capacity of antioxidants against free radicals. Once the ORAC test was perfected, many formulators and companies contrived ways to exploit this value in an attempt to make their product appear 'fuller' or 'better.'

The principals of balance, variety, and moderation are the keys to success in life, work, and health. Simply loading the body up with supplements is not the answer. You must supplement your bodies natural production of all the vital amino acids, vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidents, dietary fiber, carbohydrates, and so on. Your body can only use a limited amount of these supplements, so feeding it more is simply wasting your time, and more importantly, wasting your hard earned money!

Make sure you do your research, but becareful if you talk to your medical doctor. Most MD's are not up on the natural supplement scene, so they tend to discount the value of such supplements. Visit a naturopath, they usually have 1 free consultation, search the internet, ask family and friends, and find out what the professional atheletes use.

If you follow some of these steps, you will have success in finding natural supplements that will have dramtic benefits on your body.

Logistic And Woodpellets Complex And Stringent Requirements

It is imperative that the quality standards be maintained while the wood pellets are being transported. Thus there are stringent rules laid down to ensure high quality during transportation right from the manufacturer till the consumer. The organization responsible for setting the standards of logistics aspects is called DIN CERTCO. The exact rules and regulations regarding transportation issues have been laid down with great detail inside the scheme of certification. The entire ONORM M 7136 details have been elaborated inside this scheme. There are also several other vital considerations which have been mentioned in the scheme regarding implementing these standards.

Two major standards

There are two vital product standards namely the DIN 5173 and the ONORM M 7135 which are also incorporated while considering logistics aspects of transporting wood pellets. The DIN 5173 standard is all about the testing of all solid fuel types such as untreated and compressed wood.

Responsibilities of the transporting company

The company which is transporting the wood pellets needs to provide certain proofs of the quality. For example the company needs to supply proof that the wood pellets have all been certified and come with the seal of quality stating DIN Plus. These wood pellets then need to be delivered and supplied. It is also mandatory that the wood pellets which are not certified are transported in a separate vehicle from the certified pellets. The warehousing aspect of the logistics also needs to satisfy certain regulations. In addition, aspects regarding immediate storage, as well as end delivery to user and regarding transportation vehicles etc. as well as delivery personnel must adhere to the regulations.

Quality checks performed

First the transportation company will need to perform quality management checks inside its own premises in order to ensure adherence to standards. In addition to these checks it is also ensured that the implementation aspects are also in strict accordance with the regulations as stated in the logistics standards. These checks are performed on an annual basis by third party personnel who are commissioned from the organization DIN CERTCO.

Improvement areas

As far as logistics is concerned in the transportation and distribution of wood pellets there are certain areas that seriously need improvement. For example the overall quality of the wood pellets need to be raised dramatically, the costs of transportation issues also need to be significantly reduced and the overall confidence of the end user needs to be enhanced. Only then will the usage of biomass increase and so will the storage, distribution, delivery as well as transportation of wood pellets improve. Being an alternative source of fuel which is carbon neutral it is imperative that the quality standards be implemented stringently.

Theres Plenty To Choose From When Selecting Outdoor Wall Fountains

When it comes to outdoor wall fountains, there are a variety of different installation and location options available to you.

Wall mounted fountains are an excellent choice for adding visual appeal to a wall that would otherwise be drab or plain. Wall mounted fountains are also ideal for dressing up any part of your yard, garden, deck or gazebo where the amount of space available to you is limited, and where you require a little dash of visual appeal without taking up too much space.

In addition to basic wall mounted fountain options, you can also consider outdoor wall fountains (specifically designed for gardens, yards and patios) and alcove outdoor wall fountains. Outdoor wall fountains add a certain amount of character to an outdoor yard or garden, while adding relaxation and a sense of calming or serenity at the same time.

What makes outdoor wall fountains so great is the wide variety of different sizes, colors and themes. Some of these include hanging, wall mounted, free standing, tall and narrow, short and wide and alcove fountains for example. There are also a wide variety of different styles and materials that wall fountains are available in. Are you looking for a contemporary fountain, or something a little more traditional? Most water fountains are actually created to work both indoors and outdoors, meaning that any fountain you encounter can serve as an outdoor wall fountain. Some outdoor wall fountains are cast in fiber resin, meaning that they are a lot more lightweight than traditional fountains. These are ideal outdoor wall fountains if you are limited ground space and are looking for something that can be suspended from a wall or deck.

Most outdoor wall fountains come self-contained with the appropriate hosing set up, and simple instructions for installation. Most outdoor water fountains can be installed with the cord coming out in a conspicuous way so that it may be routed to a power source. Some outdoor wall fountains have a variety of different additions incorporated into them, such as indirect lighting, or combinations of multiple materials such as rock and copper, or steel and slate. Outdoor wall fountains are designed to add an additional layer of tranquility, boldness or calmness to any outdoor setting.

Some outdoor wall fountains, like alcove wall fountains and freestanding wall fountains are designed to press right up against a wall, creating a dramatic look. There are a lot of wall fountains that are designed to appeal from any angle, but there are others that have their own specific arrangement. If center stage in your yard or garden is reserved for entertaining functions, then a space commanding an outdoor wall fountain may be difficult to implement, but something smaller and free standing or hanging may still be a viable option.
